Dear Chrono-Tourists,
Thank you for taking an interest in this Special Edition on Rivers of the Time Travellers Guide Through Space Time.
This time we welcome you to Section Panke 04, a periurban zone just outside of Berlin. But is it only that? Or is there more to see there?
Travelling here you may observe the shaping of the Panke valley by glacial melt, and as the landscape remains in motion, the slow erosion of the Panke, until human attempts of freezing its meanders in time. It really is a destination for those fascinated by the slow, grinding physics of the universe. This Section serves as a primary example of a territory in constant transformation, where human and natural agitation seems to mushily intertwine and slowly but surely changes this place into a mismatched puzzle.
A time traveler must understand Time as an active physical force, the one that’s behind entropy, the natural disorder State in which territory arrange themselves as Time passes.
Should you wish to navigate this without your brain turning into entropic soup, we suggest adopting the following methodology.

Space Time State

the 3-dimensional matrix of ↑ Space → Time ↖ State

SPACE : The Transect defines a space, rather than a zone of action. In this instance It is an infinitely thin zone, that stretches from A to B. All its cracks and crevices, turns and elevation are an accurate and objective reality.
TIME : The Time is including past, present, and future. It can be a collection of events from history, an explanation as to why things are the way they are now, and an inaccurate hope of what will come later.
STATE : The State is a conglomerate of experiences. These ones happened on the third of May 2026. It is then deeply personal and sensible. The Panke River gurgling slowly in front of us, the roaring strip of the A114 Autobahn runs to our left, and steel train tracks slice the landscape to our right.

As we meander around this line on our visit, we find ourselves physically walking through Time and Space, yet our senses can only experience the specific State of our environment at the exact second of our observation.
A State of dereliction, but from who ?
Had this always been a fragmented periphery?

State + Space = Map

Waternetwork Panke

A map is a flat snapshot that freezes motion, designed to give humans the comforting illusion that they know where they are, the answer of when they are always being… now of course. By isolating a single State within a specific Space, a map completely ignores the fact that everything is moving all the time. It results in a single static layer, the cartographic equivalent of looking at a single frame of a film. Even with digital mapping technic, where Google Maps attempts for instance updates the map at every political or natural change occurring, seemingly in real time, the past is always erased, as if our navigation in the world is unmediated by past event, furthering the disconnect between cause and effect.

Space + Time = Superposition

When you allow Space and Time to collide, the layers stack into a Superposition.
Events scattered on the map, at the place of their happenings, inform more of less as to why the space is arranged this way. Put simply, It’s the geographical disposition of a timeline.

History, you will find, is never fully erased , but it is written over. Centuries before, writing was itself written over, as space came to miss for more text, so the text was simply written over now irrelevant text. The territory is also a physical palimpsest, with new addition being poured over the old. It is the mapping of the scars of the landscape, and each layer reveals at its end the beginning of the layer under. Yet, it only reveals this Millefeuille in its current state, half-eaten.

Geological cut

Exchanging y for z axis, the geological cut reveals the deep-time foundation of your destination.
Here, the fine sands, glacial till, and erratic boulders (Findlinge) deposited by ancient ice sheets reveal the State of the Panketal. The geological layers created difficult conditions for 19th-century engineering. In his writings, James Hobrecht detailed specific methods to stabilize these unstable soils, to embed the pressurized sewage pipes, leading to the Northern Sewage irrigation fields (as seen in The Time Travellers Guide Through Space Time, Special Edition Rivers, Panke, Section Panke 03).

Time + State = Sequence

By pairing Time with State, we observe a sequence of ecological and political shifts.

Because Maps do not exist for deeper layers of time, Palynology is used as the primary method for reconstructing the transition from a natural to a cultural landscape. Pollen analyses from the ancient Slavic fortress of Blankenburg reveal a dominance of Pinus and Quercus. The genesis of northern Barnim reveals a transition from climatic to increasingly anthropogenic driving forces. In the 7th century, the Old Slavic settlement of Blankenburg became established, characterized by selective oak harvesting and intensive grain cultivation. The landscape is not a static legacy, but rather the dynamic result of anthropogenic denudation and the influence of vegetation history.

But when all three axes were combined, the center of the 3 headed matrix collapsed into a void. The drawing becomes a dense, unreadable mess of lines, data, and historical echoes.
We call this an overlay overload : a visual traffic jam where TOO MUCH trying to occupy your field of vision at once.

Space Time Transect

To escape this void and ensure safe time-travels we developed the space-time transect, This instrument rests on two conceptual operations: first, we flattened the vertical spatial depth of a traditional map into a single horizontal line of distance, x. Then, we replaced the vertical axis entirely with time, t.
By sacrificing spatial depth, we gain temporal depth, allowing you to view the the Panke valley through the ages. The map is now readable from left to right as what shape our infinitesimal space around the transect line, and from bottom to top as from past to now (and even looking into fantasied futures)

Time cut us off

What this specially crafted tool offers us to see is not only a tapestry of decrescendo intensity, but also precise understanding of how things came to be.
To experience the urban planning policy of the GDR first hand, adjust your time-dials to 1970 to watch the Autobahn being build right through a preexisting settlement, trapping a pocket of land between the A114 Autobahn and the straightened, artificially tamed banks of the Panke River.

If you fast-forward to the year 2026, you can chat with the inhabitants of the new island.
The old garden community has disintegrated into a collection of individuals. The only thing keeping the residents connected to the human beings on the other side of the motorway is a single water pipe running under the asphalt, managed by the "Water Association" (Wassergemeinschaft). The members meet once a year in the purpose of figuring out who is going to pay the water bill.

On the other side of the highway you will find Bernd, a resident who has been writing polite, increasingly ignored emails to different people of Berlins governing apparatus for years. He remembers when the area was full of bats and lapwings before the concrete slabs arrived in 1970. He describes agitatedly a situation that can only be described as kafkaesque.
"We simply had to accept it," Bernd tells you.
Before you leave, you look at the facades of the houses. The vibration of the renovation works on the Autobahn has left visible cracks in the plaster actively eroding the present. It makes you feel something.
